Getting Ready for the New Year

Getting Ready for the New Year

Meet at 4 at the Wesley Cottage at Saluda United Methodist Church.

We'll discuss our need to let go of things from our past year
and the power of making goals or setting a vision for the upcoming year.
Then, we'll participate in some rituals that will help ingrain in us these acts of
letting go and establishing a vision for our next year. These acts are meant for both young and old.
Listen to this scripture and bring other readings, that they may inspire your work for next year.

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:12-17

We're also having a pizza party. We'll provide the pizza and you bring salad/dessert/whatever to go with it.
See you then and bring a friend!

It's Contra Dance Time for Stone Soup

You may ask, "why would a worship laboratory go to a contra dance?" Or "How am I going to experience worship at a contra dance?"

Well, here's what to work with:
In the book of 2 Samuel chapter 6, "David danced before the Lord with all his might." Now I am not saying that we can do something just because someone in the Old Testament did it too. The context is not something we can replicate today. However, we can look at the act as a guide for us. In dancing, David embodied his love of the God whose power was overwhelming and real. It's  the embodiment that we're seeking; a physical way to acknowledge and participate in our God who calls us to love one another in powerful and real ways.

In contra dancing we don't just agree with the idea that we are called to live out our love of God and love of neighbor by saying we like people in theory. In contra dancing we are called to look our neighbor (friend and stranger) in the eye from a close distance. We are called to ask if it is okay to spin this way or that. Permission seeking and agreement making are good practices. Contra dancing calls us to make new friends and build relationships at a time when our schedules and fears tend to make us more isolated and selfish. It isn't easy to do. We do this to worship the God of love who we celebrate at this time of year because this love came and dwelt with us, Jesus the embodied one. At the contra dance, we're not asking you to talk about your love of God and neighbor, we're asking you to actually grow in your love of God and love of neighbor with all your might.
(all pics are from the Harvest Moon Folk Society website. HMFS sponsored the last dance we attended)

So, here's the gig Katrina has put together for us. (thanks Katrina)

FOR STONE SOUP we can meet at 3:00 at the Methodist Church we can say a dancing prayer and carpool / caravan down.
It seems that we wouldn't really want to eat right before? and everyone might have different times they want to stay and 7:00 getting back might be too late to eat together? so I think we should call off a dinner.

and here's the dance info...
(the following is Judy Wards letter.)

Giving Thanks at Stone Soup
4 p.m. at Westley Cottage

We'll be working on how to grow into a  lifestyle of gratitude.
We'll also reflect on the spiritual aspects of table fellowship as we get ready to kick off
the Saluda Welcome Table this week (Tues. 5:30-7:00)
See you Sunday.
Read Gospel of John Chapter 13 especially verses 34-35

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Ali has made two soups, a bean and sausage and a split pea (vegetarian), so you can bring whatever you would like to go with it.

Stone Soup for Sunday November 11
4 p.m. at the Wesley Cottage
Sandwiches potluck and Movie Night
Themes: Don't make assumptions and Always do your best
We'll use Mark 12:38-44 to encourage our discussion with the four agreements.

As [Jesus] taught, he said, ‘Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.’
He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’

Then, when we're through with dinner we'll carpool whoever wants to go to the Epic for a movie (around the 7 p.m. show times). There's no public school on Monday so, invite a friend.

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Read this part of Isaiah 58 (from "The Message" version of the Bible) and then read below about what Stone Soup will be doing this week at 1:30 p.m.

Your Prayers Won’t Get Off the Ground

Is58 1-3 “Shout! A full-throated shout!
    Hold nothing back—a trumpet-blast shout!
Tell my people what’s wrong with their lives,
face my family Jacob with their sins!
They’re busy, busy, busy at worship,
and love studying all about me.
To all appearances they’re a nation of right-living people—
    law-abiding, God-honoring.
They ask me, ‘What’s the right thing to do?’
and love having me on their side.
But they also complain,
‘Why do we fast and you don’t look our way?
Why do we humble ourselves and you don’t even notice?’
3-5 “Well, here’s why:
“The bottom line on your ‘fast days’ is profit.
You drive your employees much too hard.
You fast, but at the same time you bicker and fight.
You fast, but you swing a mean fist.
The kind of fasting you do
won’t get your prayers off the ground.
Do you think this is the kind of fast day I’m after:
a day to show off humility?
To put on a pious long face
and parade around solemnly in black?
Do you call that fasting,
a fast day that I, God, would like?
6-9 “This is the kind of fast day I’m after:
to break the chains of injustice,
get rid of exploitation in the workplace,
    free the oppressed,
    cancel debts.
What I’m interested in seeing you do is:
sharing your food with the hungry,
inviting the homeless poor into your homes,
putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad,
being available to your own families.
Do this and the lights will turn on,
and your lives will turn around at once.
Your righteousness will pave your way.
The God of glory will secure your passage.
Then when you pray, God will answer.
You’ll call out for help and I’ll say, ‘Here I am.’

Sunday November 4, Stone Soup will meet at 1:30p.m. at Saluda UMC and car pool down to Harmon field for the annual CROP Walk for Hunger at 2. The money raised will go to Church World Service (http://www.churchworldservice.org/ ) and we will be part of worship before the walk. No meal this week, but bring snacks if you want for after the walk. We can be through by 4. Bring some money if you would like to make a donation or go to our local website www.foothillscropwalk.org . Below are pictures from last year.

Saluda Stone Soup for 10/28/12
Slow Food Potluck at Leap Farm
Meet at 4 to carpool down (come back when you want, event ends 6:30 p.m.)

Here's the website with details..
SlowFoodsFoothills

Here's the text of the Prayer for Beginning a Meal.
As we begin this meal with grace,
Let us become aware of the memory
Carried inside the food before us:
The quiver of the seed
Awakening in the earth,
Unfolding in a trust of roots
And slender stems of growth,
On its voyage toward harvest,
The kiss of rain and surge of sun;
The innocence of animal soul
That never spoke a word,
Nourished by the earth
To become today our food;
The wor of all the strangers [and friends]
Whose hands prepared it,
The privilege of wealth and health
That enables us to feast and celebrate.

Kingdom of God:
The Overlapping and Interlocking of Heaven and Earth
Stone Soup
Sunday October 21 4:00 p.m.
Scripture reflections Job 38:1-7; Mark 10:35-43 (see below)
We'll gather at 4 at the Wesley Cottage. Then we'll explore some of the different places in our town and their functions in an effort to explore our part in the significance of place.
We'll talk about what makes a place, an event or us holy.
We'll use this to explore the significance of eating together, playing together, worshipping together and living together.
For our meal together, we'll have a regular potluck (if you want a focus, think about fall specialties).
I can't wait to see you then. Invite a friend.
Rob

Job 38:1-7
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind:
‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. ‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?.

Mark 10:35-43

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’ And he said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’ They replied, ‘We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.’
When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John.So Jesus called them and said to them, ‘You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,

Stone Soup Harvest Fest Potluck at Columbus UMC
This Sunday, 10/14, we'll meet at 4:30 to carpool down to Columbus United Methodist Church for a Fall Potluck. The church will provide the turkey and drinks and we can all bring potluck vegetables, salad, desserts or whatever we want. We'll discuss pilgrimage, labyrinths and embodied prayer. We'll also enjoy the changing season. We should be back up the mountain by 6:30. There is lots of room for the kids to play outside down in Columbus.
See you Sunday...

Below are pictures from last Sunday's hike and the fire ring where we shared communion.

Stone Soup for Sunday Oct. 7 Meets at 2 PM AT THE SALUDA LIBRARY.
We're going hiking with SCLT (Saluda Community Land Trust) on the Upper Camp Creek Trail.
We meet at 2, then drive to the trail head. After hiking, everyone is invited to Rob's house (just a half mile down the road from the trail head) for cookout and camping.
We plan to have worship on the trail, a time for thanksgiving, reflection and communion.
If anyone doesn't want to hike you can meet us at Rob's house (call 828-606-3452 for directions) at 5 for fellowship and food. Everyone can bring what you would like to a cookout (a protein and a side) and Rob will provide the makings for S'MORES.
We've got room for tents around the campfire and room for 10 kids in the treehouse, so stay the night with us since the next day is a school holiday. The Parsons/Hestons will provide pancake batter to cook over the fire (or stove if you want to bring one) and you can bring whatever else you might need (we can use refrigeration from the house if necessary).

Our scripture lesson is Matthew 18: 23-34

‘For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.” And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, “Pay what you owe.” Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you.” But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, “You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy on you?” And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he should pay his entire debt.

We're also looking at not taking things personally as the second agreement.

Then if you are still up for more adventure, we're planning a rock climbing adventure in Pisgah Forest National Park on Monday.

Stone Soup for 9/30/12
BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD...
AND BRING GOOD MUSIC...
WE'LL LOOK AT THE POWER OF OUR WORDS AND LISTEN/SING WHATEVER YOU BRING.

"For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits." (James 3:2-5 NRSV)

Speak with integrity.  Say only what you mean.  Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.  Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Jesus said, "Let your word be “Yes, Yes” or “No, No”; anything more than this comes from the evil one." (Matthew 5:37 NRSV)

Our food theme for this week will be APPLES. Anything with apples. Remember that there is more to apples than desserts, they can be in savory dishes with proteins too.
(these are apples we gleaned with Society of St. Andrew a couple of years ago)

Oct 7 we’re doing a SCLT hike on the upper Camp Creek and then ending up at Rob and Ali’s house for bonfire and cookout. Stay the night if you want and we’ll see if we can get some rock climbing in the next day (teacher work day)!

The kids should be back by around 6:30 p.m. Looking forward, Oct 7 we’re doing a SCLT hike on the upper Camp Creek and then ending up at Rob and Ali’s house for bonfire and cookout. The man who had it all
Discovered
That he had it all...
Wrong

Stone Soup for September 16th...
We will meet at 4 p.m. at the Wesley Cottage. Katrina’s bringing Gypsy Soup, Ali’s baking bread, we need a salad (if someone would reply to that) and everyone needs to bring a mug or bowl for your soup. We’ll be watching the documentary movie, “I Am”. The movie follows a man who “had it all” but then discovers he “had it all wrong”. He then makes this documentary asking religious, political and scientific leaders from around the globe, “What’s wrong with the world and what can we do about it?” Together, we discover what’s right with the world. Come join us in our journey together as we connect our faith and spirit to God and the world. “I am the vine, you are the branches!” Read John 15:1-11in preparation for our worship and reflection together. We can eat while we watch the movie, so we can be done by 6:30 p.m.

Baked Potato Night
John 21:15-19 feed my lambs
Luke 14:15-24 everyone invited to the great dinner

We'll meet at 4 at the Wesley Cottage. The worship theme is the transforming love of God that brings hospitality, healing, justice, and celebration.
So we'll also practice our skills of celebrating. I'll bring baked potatoes. You bring what you want to put on them or eat with them.
We'll have frisbee golf if anyone wants to play. Kids (and adults) bring any games you want to play. If you need to get home for home work and such, we'll plan to finish up by 6 p.m.
Peace,
Rob

Yes!

Agreeing with your partner is the first rule in improv. It is what keeps things going and gets you places you wouldn't have gone by yourself. Oh yea, and it's really funny.
Our spiritual lives are like improv except our partner is a lot bigger. Agreeing keeps things going and gets us places that are amazing.
In the first chapter of Luke, Mary gets the pitch from God (via Gabriel) and her response was, "...Let it be with me according to your word." (Luke 1:38)
So this Sunday Sept 2 at 4 p.m. we'll begin our service with some improv practice.
Then we'll go visit with some folks at Autumn Care (especially our friend Marg, and anyone you might know). We'll get a chance to share some smiles, some scripture, some agreement and maybe even a song. It will be a great way to be in worship.
Then, we'll head back to Wesley Cottage by 5:30 for hotdogs and nachos or whatever you want to bring. (Rob will bring hotdogs and buns you bring the rest)
Since we won't have school the next day, we'll have a movie or two set up (if you have a netflix or iTunes suggestion let me know) and you can bring any games you would like to play as we say goodbye to summer.
Bring a friend or an enemy you would like to be friends with...
Rob

Lot's to recap here
This week Stone Soup Goes Tubing on the Green
Meet at 2 p.m. at the church. We'll carpool and head down to the Green River.
We'll get tubes at Green River Cove Tubing and start from there. Tubes are usually $7 per tube but I think we'll have enough for group rate and with the church rate we may only pay $4. We'll just have to see.
I'll paddle a ducky so I can carry some snacks (whatever you bring (within reason)).
Then we'll pull out at the rapid called Little Corky for snacks and worship.
I imagine we could be home by six, give or take?

Stone Soup for Aug 18-19 (Worship Saturday night at Jones Gap State Park) no Sunday afternoon service on the 19th.
Next week will be big fun. We're going to learn Contra Dancing.
Celtic spirituality says, "Never give a man a gun until he knows how to dance."
I think the idea is that you must know the joy and delight of what we treasure in orde to be good stewards. So let's go learn to dance...
Katrina leading us in this. Here's what she's setting up for us.
We have a camp site reserved for us in Jones Gap State Park. It fits up to 25 people and costs $6 per person for camping, 2 p.m. check in. Then in the evening, we'll go contra dancing ($8 per person, kids under 12 free). Don't worry if you've never done this before, they have lessons for beginners before the big dance. There is also a full pot luck before.

Mountain Top Experience Guaranteed...
...because we'll be on a mountain top.*

August 5 Stone Soup will be worshipping on Black Balsam Knob at 6,214 ft altitude. *Weather permitting, we'll meet at Saluda UMC at 4 p.m. and carpool to the parking lot off the Blue Ridge Parkway where the Art Loeb trail crosses the road. It's about a 20 min. (about half a mile with 200 feet of altitude gain) walk from there to the balds. Where we'll have evening tea (bring tea things, sandwiches, veggies and dip, cookies, etc.) Stone Soup will provide stoves, water and basic tea selections. You bring a cup (and special tea if you like). We'll share worship there and for those who wish it, communion. The plan is to stay for sunset (about 8:30, which is kind of late so, you can drive your own car if you want to leave early), so bring a flashlight/head lamp and a jacket.

"And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. Matthew 14:22b-23.

We'll also spend some time in silence at some point.
Maybe it will be on the hike up. It could be a silent pilgrimage for you. Embody what you seek. Walk your prayer.
Maybe your silence will be sitting as the day releases itself to twilight and in your prayer you too are released.
Maybe your silence will be your patient search for something bigger than yourself as we share bread, cup and sky. (Ascribe power to God, whose majesty of over Israel; and whose power is in the skies. Ps 68:34)

Here's a link to info on Black Balsam Knob including directions if you want to meet us there.

Squash-a-Palooza and Ultimate Frisbee at Harmon Field

We'll meet at the church at 4 p.m. and then carpool down to Harmon Field where we'll play on the playgrounds there, and play Ultimate Frisbee. For worship, we'll wrestle with what is ultimate in our lives by reflecting on Matthew 13:44...

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Then it's Squash-a-Palooza! Everybody has to have too much squash and zucchini this time of year, so bring it. Cook it your favorite way and bring it to a squash-any-way-you-can potluck. Of course, if you don't like squash or are already sick of it bring PBJ or whatever pleases you.

If it gets hot, we can cool off in the Pacolet River so bring a towel... and a friend!
